KazMunayGas (KMG), Kazakhstan's national oil and gas company, recently unveiled its extensive geological exploration programme for 2026-2030. Presented at an expanded meeting with leading geologists and industry veterans, the initiative focuses on critically replenishing the country’s oil and gas resource base. This strategy addresses the natural decline observed in mature fields.
The programme's central aim is to expand exploration into new regions and deeper geological formations. KMG reports that this approach is essential for sustaining Kazakhstan's long-term energy security, a critical factor for the Central Asian state’s economic stability. Participants underscored the necessity of this strategic shift given ongoing resource depletion.
Based on extensive regional studies and historical geological and geophysical data analysis, KMG has developed a portfolio of 23 projects. These projects, currently at different maturity stages, hold an estimated total geological resource potential of up to 65 billion tonnes of reference fuel. This significant potential underpins the long-term viability of Kazakhstan’s energy sector.
The comprehensive programme outlines ambitious exploration activities, including 6,250 kilometres of 2D seismic surveys and 2,540 square kilometres of 3D seismic work. Further plans involve 22,000 geochemical sampling points and the drilling of 26 exploratory wells. These technical measures are designed to provide detailed subsurface intelligence.
A major component of the exploration push involves a large-scale 2D seismic campaign covering 60,000 kilometres within the Caspian Basin. This specific effort targets pre-salt formations, which are geologically complex but often highly prospective for hydrocarbons. Unlocking these reserves could significantly bolster Kazakhstan's standing as a key energy producer.
During the meeting, experts offered recommendations on seismic survey design, data processing, and interpretation, including the innovative use of artificial intelligence. Guidance was also provided on advanced approaches to drilling and testing complex deep wells. The integration of cutting-edge technology is seen as vital for optimising exploration outcomes.
The programme garnered broad support from participants, who highlighted the critical importance of combining deep industry experience with advanced technological applications. This collaborative approach aims to improve exploration success rates and ensure the longevity of Kazakhstan’s hydrocarbon production. KMG’s proactive stance reflects a broader regional commitment to energy resource management.
